Services, Utilities and Leak Detection Services

We detect what the eye can’t see.

Underground Detection has the experience, expertise and has invested in leading equipment to detect subsurface problems that cannot be seen. Our service involves the detection of underground water, services and utilities as well as unseen problems – problems that you may or may not think that there is a solution for.

So, before you excavate or drill, contact us, there may be an alternative to excavating or breaking, or we may be able to pinpoint the precise location for the best results – saving you time, money and inconvenience.

Plumbing and Leak Repairs

Unseen leaks need special attention, and often a regular plumber won’t do. If you have a hidden leak, you need to be sure that you are speaking to the right person with the right equipment and credentials. With extensive experience in leak detection, unseen leaks are quickly detected with minimal disruption, saving you time and money, and ensuring that not only is the leak repaired professionally but that the site is restored to normal, and clean once the job is done.

Leak Detection

Is your water meter spinning while no water is being used or are you receiving an abnormally high municipal bill?

If yes, it is a good idea to call us. We have helped homeowners, townhouse complexes, commercial- and industrial properties, to detect unseen problematic leaks underground and in concrete slabs, multi-level housing, flat roofs, bathroom walls and floors.
We specialise in non-destructive testing techniques, as well as the continuous remote logging of water meters.

Subsurface Utility Detection & Inspection

We assist property owners, contractors and engineers by locating, tracing or inspecting the subsurface before the drilling of boreholes or civil projects to identify services, like underground plastic, copper, galvanized and concrete pipes, as well as subsurface tanks, graves and other buried objects that may be encountered.
Tracing is done from the surface by using ground penetrating radar, while the further internal inspection is done using CCTV. CCTV is also able to inspect water & sewer pipes for damage, root infestation, collapsed or broken pipes that cause continual blockage.

Groundwater Detection

Advanced portable underground surveying equipment is used to analyse the ground to site boreholes and locate fault zones where water may be found.

We conduct surveys over the surface and produce virtual 3D images that trace the water-bearing structures of the subsurface, showing engineers and contractors the best place to drill for water.

Remote Watermeter Logging

We install and monitor Remote Water Logging Devices that continuously monitor water usage in townhouse complexes, flats & apartments, factories and shopping centres; helping you take control of your water consumption and prevent against excessive water loss.

Why Choose Underground Detection?

Expertise

John Moorcroft is a Qualified Geologist and has a scientific understanding of ground subsidence, ground material and how this impacts on the problem and how it is best solved.

Latest Technology

We have invested in the latest detection technology. Our apparatuses are lightweight and portable enabling us to react quickly and service the entire Southern Africa region.

Save Money

We are able to identify the best place to dig for water, fix a leak or excavate. Ensuring that there is no damage to underground services and utilities, saving time and money, as well as the best outcome.

Detection/Inspection Equipment and Working Methods

Acoustics

Contact and ground microphones
These form the basic part of our toolbox. This equipment is used almost every day. The contact units amplify the sound of leaks or flow of water in pipes, while ground acoustic probes are used when searching for leaks.

Leak Noise Correlation

Locating leaks using acoustic devices attached to transmitters
The correlator unit can be used as an acoustic detector and can also be attached to a ground microphone.

Gas Detection

Locating water leaks using gas
Gas (5% H, 95% N) is fed into the pipeline system. A gas analyser is then used to locate the leak.

Drain Camera

A small CCTV camera is pushed into a pipeline to do internal inspections
Useful for locating the cause of blockages in sewers or severely cracked pipes.

Transmitter Detection

A small transmitter (sonde) is pushed through a pipe
The transmitter is pushed through a pipe and a receiver unit is used to track the transmitter and thereby trace the pipeline.

Cable and Pipe Detector

Used to trace energized cables
The unit consists of a case which is a remote transmitter and a receiver and is used to trace the route and depth of plastic, copper or other metallic pipes and cables. It is also used to track sondes.

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

Used to inspect anything underground
A signal is sent into the ground and bounces off objects, the image of which is seen on a screen in real time. It is used to locate larger pipes, cables, conduits, storm water pipes, broken ground (caused by leaks), sinkholes, voids, tanks, graves, buried objects, bedrock horizons, bedding planes, etc.

Infrared Scanners (IR)

IR detects temperature and displays the differences in temperature on an object or surface
It is used to locate hot water pipes in walls, under tiles and trace any hot water pipe under a floor, provided the pipe is reasonably close to the surface. They are also used in the detection of underground leaks.

Detection of Underground Water

Siting of boreholes
A survey is conducted over the surface using portable underground surveying equipment, and an image of the subsurface is produced by tracing the water bearing structures and showing the best place to drill for water.
